Introduction
Tajweed of the Holy Qur'an means reciting the Holy Qur'an by giving each letter its rights following every rule associated with it. When the Qur'an was revealed on Prophet Mohammad PBUH, it was revealed along with Tajweed rules.
Ubayy bin Kab said:
The Prophet صلی اللہ علیہ وسلم was present at the pool of Banu Ghifar, Jibril came to him and said: Allah has commanded you to make your community read (the Qur'an) in one harf. He (the Prophet) said: 'I beg Allah His pardon and forgiveness; my community has no strength to do so'. He then came for the second time and told him the same thing till he reached up to seven harfs. Finally, he said: 'Allah has commanded you to make your community read (the Qur'an) in seven harfs; in whichever mode they read, that will be correct.
(Sunan Abu Dawood, 1478)
Arabs and non-Arabs both must learn Tajweed but it is not obligatory for a Muslim. If a person keeps reciting Qur'an without learning Tajweed, he can make mistakes in the meanings of Ayahs as a simple letter's pronunciation can change the meaning of the whole Ayah.
As Allah said in the Holy Qur'an,
“And recite the Qur'an (aloud) in a (slow and melodious) style (tarteela)”.
(Surah Muzzammil, Ayah 4)
According to Scholars, this Ayah means to read the Qur'an with proper Tajweed.
Melodious doesn't mean singing style as it is strictly prohibited in Islam.
Learning Tajweed is more important for non-Arabs as they are unfamiliar with this language and Arabic has certain rules and styles. For Arabs, it is necessary because Quranic Arabic is different from the one which is spoken in daily life. The recitation of the Qur'an has its own rules which have to be followed by everyone.
If we keep in mind the benefits of learning Tajweed then this will become easy and interesting to learn. Here are some benefits of learning Tajweed of Al-Qur'an:
● The reward for both expert and learner
Allah is kind and merciful, He knows the struggle and fear we will face while learning Tajweed, so He has put a reward for both those who are proficient and for the one who tries to read properly but make mistakes.
Aa’ishah, may Allah be pleased with her, relates that the Prophet (SAW) said:
“Verily the one who recites the Qur'an beautifully, smoothly, and precisely, he will be in the company of the noble and obedient angels. As for the one who recites with difficulty, stammering or stumbling through its verses, then he will have TWICE that reward.”
(Al- Bukhari and Muslim)
● Become best among other Muslims
Everyone wants to be the best or to be in the company of the best people. Prophet Mohammad PBUH has told us how to be in the company of the best people.
“Uthmaan, may Allah be pleased with him, said that the Prophet (SAW) said: “The best of you are the ones who learn the Qur'an and teach it to others”
(Al-Bukhari)
● Each letter of the Qur'an has a reward
The best part of learning the Qur'an is every letter has a reward.
Whoever reads a letter from the Book of Allah, he will have a reward and that reward will be multiplied by ten.
“I am not saying that “Alif, Laam, Meem” is a letter, rather I am saying that “Alif” is a letter, “Laam” is a letter and “Meem” is a letter.”
(Tirmidhi states this is saheeh)
● A way to Paradise
Learning the Qur'an is an easy way to enter Paradise. As this Sahih Hadith says,
"The Qur'an is an intercessor, something permitted to intercede, and it is rightfully believed in. Whoever puts it in front of him, it will lead him to Paradise; whoever puts it behind him, it will steer him to the Hellfire.”
(Al-Tabrani)
We hesitate in learning Tajweed because we find it difficult to learn.

The best way to learn Tajweed is by finding any authentic teacher with whom you can practice it.
