Factors that makes us lazy

Tips on how to overcome our laziness to read al-Quran

Introduction

Laziness is a lack of energy or willingness to do anything. Many factors in a person's life make him lazy. Most importantly, laziness in worship of Allah is caused by Shaytaan, who is always after a believer to show him the wrong path.

Allah has used laziness for hypocrites when they stand for Salah.

Surat No 4: سورة النساء - Ayat No 142

“Indeed, the hypocrites [think to] deceive Allah, but He is deceiving them. And when they stand for prayer, they stand lazily, showing [themselves to] the people and not remembering Allah except a little.”

Similarly, Hadith about laziness states that,

Narrated Abu Huraira:

“Allah's Apostle said, Shaytaan puts three knots at the back of the head of any of you if he is asleep. On every knot he reads and exhales the following words, 'The night is long, so stay asleep.' When one wakes up and remembers Allah, one knot is undone; and when one performs ablution, the second knot is undone, and when one prays the third knot is undone and one gets up energetic with a good heart in the morning; otherwise, one gets up lazy and with a mischievous heart.”

(Sahih Bukhari, Ayah 1142)

So, Shaytaan is trying his best to stop us from worshipping Allah. As Salah is obligatory on every Muslim, five times a day, so Shaytaan stops him from it. If a person gets lazy in his Salah then other worship like reading the Qur'an will also become difficult.

Here are some factors that make us lazy in reading the Qur'an:

Excuses

Most people procrastinate reading the Holy Qur'an because of excuses. Here we will be discussing some of them.

Lack of time

The main excuse is that we are so busy in our lives and always giving us excuses that I don't have time for reading the Qur'an.

Recited Qur'an during Salah

We think that reading the Qur'an in Salah every day is enough. We don't need to read it from Mashaf.

Mental block

The other excuse people give is that we need a specific spiritual state to read the Qur'an.

Guilt

When we haven't read the Qur'an for a long time then Shaytaan brings up in our mind that we are sinners and haven't read the Qur'an for so long, how would you touch it now, maybe when Ramadhan is coming, I will start reading Al-Qur'an again.

Haven't learned properly

This is a very common excuse that I haven't learned to read the Qur'an with Tajweed. That's why I cannot read it.

Cannot understand the meaning

Without trying and learning people give the excuse that I couldn't understand the meaning of Ayahs. That's why reading without understanding is useless.

Environment

The environment we live in plays an important role in building our habits and character. If we are living in an environment where people are lazy then it will affect our activity also. This can be identified as if most of the people don't bother to solve their problems, they are so lazy that they are ready to live in miserable conditions rather than bring change. In these circumstances, laziness in worship will also occur, as the Holy Qur'an is a source of change in not only personal life but also will change our surroundings if followed. Lazy person does not want to change so automatically he will become lazy in reading the Qur'an.

  Comfort Zone

Muslims all over the world are in love with their comfort zone. They don't want to change their lives, that's why they don't strive hard to read, learn and understand the Holy Qur'an.

Relationships

Our relationships also affect our habits. If parents are lazy then children will also learn this from them. If the spouse is lazy then his company will make us lazy also. That's why our Prophet Muhammad PBUH said,

"Every one of you is a guardian and is responsible for his charges. The ruler who has authority over people is a guardian and is responsible for them, a man is a guardian of his family and is responsible for them; a woman is a guardian of her husband’s house and children and is responsible for them; a slave (‘Abu) is a guardian of his master’s property and is responsible for it; so, all of you are guardians and are responsible for your charges.”

(Bukhari, Book #46, Hadith #730)

Health

Health is wealth. A healthy lifestyle makes a person active and enthusiastic. In today's century, we are dependent on machines more than physical activity which is making us lethargic and lazy. A sick person cannot bring up the energy to read.

Financial burden

Sometimes, we are so busy with our jobs or business that religious duties get neglected. Due to the stress of earning more and more, we are procrastinating in reading the Holy Qur'an. And ultimately, we forgot to read it.

Negligence

One form of negligence is offering Salah and reading the Qur'an quickly without understanding any meaning of it. This negligence makes a person lazy to read and understand the Qur'an.

There are some tips to overcome these factors:

  1. Take out 10 minutes to recite the Qur'an daily. This will not hinder any of your activities.

  1. Mostly whatever we are reciting in our Salah are short Surahs or those which we have memorised. But when we read the Qur'an by giving it proper time, every Surah we read, we will find a different subject and essence. So, it is not enough to only read the Qur'an in Salah.

  1. There is nothing as the spiritual state will come on its own. Reading the Qur'an will bring spirituality to our hearts.

4.   Your guilt is right, but use it to repent and start it from today. Seek protection from the whispers of Shaytaan.

5.    If you are unable to read and understand properly, then you must find a teacher and learn properly. Meanwhile, whatever you know, read it. As every letter of the Qur'an has a reward and there is a reward for those who try to read despite inability.

Laziness in reading the Holy Qur'an is not a small thing, it can lead a person to hypocrisy. That's why our Prophet Muhammad PBUH has sought protection from laziness.

“O Allah, I take refuge in You from anxiety and sorrow, weakness and laziness, miserliness and cowardice, the burden of debts and from being overpowered by men.”

We should also keep trying and seek protection from laziness from Allah.
