Introduction

Qur'an is the word of Allah, and Allah has sent this gift to us for our guidance in this World and hereafter also, to successfully reach our goal which is Jannah. This can only be possible if we make the Qur'an our friend. This is the book that shows the right path.

“Read in the name of your Lord, who has created (all that exists) and has created man from a clot”

(Surah Al-ʿAlaq, 96:1-2)

This was the very first Ayah revealed to Prophet Mohammad PBUH, and the very first command Allah gave humankind was to read! Although He knows Prophet Mohammad PBUH cannot read it, and it will be difficult for the other humans also. But this was the commitment Allah wanted from us from the first revelation.

Surat No 17: سورة بنی اسراءیل - Ayat No 9

Indeed, this Qur'an guides to that which is most suitable and gives good tidings to the believers who do righteous deeds that they will have a great reward.

Mainly to get successful in front of Allah, we have to read, understand, and then practically follow commands of the Qur'an.

The Holy Qur'an is the book that only gives us everything. It gives us peace of heart and guidance.

Anas ibn Maalik (may Allah be pleased with him) said:

“The Messenger of Allah (blessings and peace of Allah be upon him) said: “Verily Allah has His own people among mankind.” They said: “O Messenger of Allah, who are they?” He said: “They are the people of the Qur'an, Allah’s own people and those who are closest to Him.”

Here are some tips to make Qur'an our friend:

  • The intention of making friendship with the Holy Qur'an should be acquiring friendship with Allah.
  • The intention should not be to acquire any worldly benefits or praise from people.
  • Recite it daily. The Scholars have disliked the individual whose day passed without looking at the Qur'an.
  • Reciting the Holy Qur'an in night prayer (Qiyaam al-layl) is like a conversation with Allah.
  • Recite it the way it is revealed that is from proper Tajweed.
  • Learn how to recite it properly.
  • Practice it daily to become perfect in Tajweed.
  • Reciting it is not enough, understanding its meaning and interpretation is necessary.
  • Listen and read to experts of Qur'anic understanding to understand the authentic meaning of its verses.
  • Once you understand it, apply it to your life.
  • Start applying one command of Allah, then another. Companions of Prophet Mohammad PBUH used to first apply one verse on their life then they move to another verse. This was their way to make their life according to the Qur'an.

Ibn Mas‘ood said:

“If one of us learned ten verses, he would not move on from them until he understood their meanings and acted upon them.”

Read and understand Sunnah of Prophet Mohammad PBUH as his character was the same as the Qur'an, according to his wife Aisha R.A. The Qur'an has been sent for all mankind till the Day of Judgement. So, it's the responsibility of every Muslim who wants to be its friend, to spread its message to everyone. After understanding, preaching is very important.

The Prophet (blessings and peace of Allah be upon him) said:

“The best of you are those who learn the Qur'an and teach it.”

Narrated by al-Bukhaari (5027)

If you have understood even one command of the Qur'an and spread it to everyone you know. One more important aspect of friendship with the Holy Qur'an is memorising it. Start by memorising one Ayah a day, small but consistent.

Al-Minnaawi (may Allah have mercy on him) said:

“That is, those who memorise the Qur'an and act by it are the people of Allah, who are as close to Allah as a person’s family is to him.”

It seems not an easy thing but when you will start memorizing it by heart, it will become easy for you. As Allah said,

Surat No 54: سورة القمر - Ayat No 17

 وَ لَقَدۡ یَسَّرۡنَا الۡقُرۡاٰنَ  لِلذِّکۡرِ  فَہَلۡ مِنۡ مُّدَّکِرٍ ﴿۱۷﴾

“And We have certainly made the Qur'an easy for remembrance, so is there anyone who will remember?”

The character of a friend of the Qur'an should be different from ordinary people but remember every deed’s intention should be for the sake of Allah. As the character of our Prophet Mohammad PBUH was the same as the Qur'an means he possesses those noble qualities which the Qur'an teaches.

1. We can follow some, by using these tips:

  • Protect your tongue from speaking bad or useless things.
  • Be kind to other people.
  • Do not backbite.
  • Do not look down on anyone just because you know the Qur'an.
  • His relations should be according to the teachings of the Qur'an.
  • Concern should not be to complete recitation of Qur'an in minimum time but implementation in life is more necessary.

2.    The Holy Qur'an will be the witness on the Day of Judgement and in the grave, so be                   careful about its friendship. Prophet ﷺ said:

Read the Qur'an, for verily it will come on the Day of Judgement as an intercessor for its companions.

(Muslim)

It will be said to the Companion of the Qur'an,

“Read and elevate (through the levels of Paradise), and beautify your voice as you used to do when you were in the dunya! For verily, your position in Paradise will be at the last verse you recite!”

(Abu Dawud)
