✅ The etiquette when making Du’a
✅ Ahadith and Surah explaining the etiquette when making Du’a
Introduction
Allah likes to be asked. He likes it when His people call Him for help and remember Him always. He does not like those who don't recall Him. As He says in the Qur'an,
“And your Lord said: “Invoke Me [i.e. believe in My Oneness (Islamic Monotheism) and ask Me for anything] I will respond to your (invocation)”
(Ghaafir 40:60)
Allah is the most powerful and glorious, so we cannot call Him just like any other person. There should be some adab or etiquette of calling Him. Here are some of the etiquettes of Du'a:
● Tauheed
The first and most important thing is that the seeker should have a firm belief in Tawheed. The seeker should believe from the heart that Allah is the Only One who is our Lord and also should accept it from the tongue. Allah says in Qur'an,
“And when My slaves ask you (O Muhammad) concerning Me, then (answer them), I am indeed near (to them by My Knowledge). I respond to the invocations of the supplicant when he calls on Me (without any mediator or intercessor). So let them obey Me and believe in Me, so that they may be led aright”
(al-Baqarah 2:186)
● Sincerity
The seeker's sincerity should be for Allah only. He should have a belief that He is the Only One who deserves to be worshipped. As Allah says,
“And they were commanded not, but that they should worship Allah, and worship none but Him Alone (abstaining from ascribing partners to Him)”
(al-Bayyinah 98:5)
● Call Him by His names
Allah loves to be called by His beautiful names.
“And (all) the Most Beautiful Names belong to Allah, so call on Him by them, and leave the company of those who believe or deny (or utter impious speech against) His Names”
(Al-A’raaf 7:180)
He accepts those Du'a which are adorned by His names.
● Praise Him
Allah deserves to be praised a lot. And He likes when His people praise Him with a strong belief in Him. As our Prophet Mohammad PBUH said,
“When one of you prays, let him start with praise of Allah, then let him send blessings upon the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him), then let him ask whatever he likes after that.”
(Al-Tirmidhi-3477)
● Blessings on Prophet (PBUH)
The seeker should send blessings upon Prophet Mohammad PBUH before D’ua. This is necessary for the acceptance of D’ua. As the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said:
“Every Du'a is kept back until you send blessings upon the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him).”
(Narrated by al-Tabaraani in al-Awsat, 1/220)
● Qibla direction
It is not necessary to face Qibla while making Du'a but this Sunnah and likeable act by Allah. On the day of Badr, our Prophet Mohammad PBUH faced the Qibla direction and raised his hands for Du'a.
● Raise hands for Du'a
This is Sunnah and Allah likes when a person raises hands for Du'a. This is a symbol of submission and humbleness in front of Allah.
The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said:
“Your Lord, may He be blessed and exalted, is Kind and Most Generous, and He is too kind to let His slave, if he raises his hands to Him, bring them back empty.”
(Abu Dawood 1488)
● Faith that He will respond
The seeker should have faith in their heart that Allah will respond to His Du'a. As Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said:
“Call upon Allah when you are certain of a response, and remember that Allah will not answer a Du'a that comes from a negligent and heedless heart.”
(al-Tirmidhi 3479)
● Frequently remember Him
Allah likes the person who frequently remembers Him. He should not be hasty in making Du'a and should have faith that Allah will accept the Du'a when there would be the right time.
● Ask strongly
The seeker should ask firmly and strongly whatever He wishes for here and hereafter. As the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said:
“No one of you should say, ‘O Allah, forgive me if You wish, O Allah, have mercy on me if You wish; he should be firm in his asking, for Allah cannot be compelled.”
(al-Bukhaari, 6339)
● Ask with fear and hope
Allah is the most magnificent and powerful, He deserves to have hope from Him that He can do anything, and also a seeker should have fear in heart of His anger. As He said in the Holy Qur'an,
“And remember your Lord within yourself, humbly and with fear and without loudness in words in the mornings and the afternoons”
(al-A’raaf 7:205)
● Three times
This is the Sunnah that Prophet Mohammad PBUH used to ask Du'a three times.
● Clean and good clothes
Islam encourages cleanliness and halal food and clothing. Halal food and halal acts are necessary for the acceptance of Du'a.
● Ask Him in silence
Allah likes when a person calls Him in his secrets. He said in the Qur'an about Zakariyya (PBUH),
"When he called to his Lord (Allah) a call in secret”
(Maryam 19:3)
Conclusion
When we will follow all etiquettes of asking Du'a, Allah will respond and accept our Du'a.
