The importance of Du’a

Ahadith and Surah about the importance of Du’a

Introduction

Du'a means asking for help or assistance from Allah. It is a way of communication with Allah. It is a door to become closer to Almighty Allah. It is a weapon that can change destiny. The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said:

“Nothing can change the Divine decree except Du'a.

(Ibn Maajah, 90; al-Tirmidhi, 139).

Our decree is written before our birth and no one knows or can change our decree but only Du'a can do it.

The Importance Of Du’a

Du'a is very important in Islam, it is an integral part of worship as our Prophet Mohammad (PBUH) said Du'a is worship. Allah likes to be called and asked. He got angry at those who don't recall Him and show arrogance that they don't need Him.

As Allah says in the Holy Qur'an,

"And your Lord says, Call on Me; I will answer your (prayer). But those who are too arrogant to worship Me will surely find themselves in Hell, in humiliation.”

(Qur'an, 40:60)

Allah doesn't like arrogance and Du'a makes a person humble and needy in front of Allah. It shows we are nothing without Allah's help.

Du'a is a way of expressing our belief in one Allah and rejecting every other entity which other people think can help or solve problems.

"When my servants ask you concerning me, (tell them) I am indeed close (to them). I listen to the prayer of every suppliant when he calls on me.”

(Qur'an, 2:186)

Du'a is a way to come out from distress and problems. When a person seeks help from Allah, He responds and removes the distress. He says in Qur'an,

أَمَّنْ يُجِيْبُ الْمُضْطَرَّ إِذَا دَعَاهُ وَيَكْشِفُ السُّوْءَ

“Is it not He Who responds to the distressed one, when he calls on Him, and Who removes the evil.”

(Surah An-Naml, 27:62)

Du'a is itself worship. When we seek Du'a, we get a reward for worship also.

Du'a has its unique importance in Islam. That's why Islam has taught us D’ua for various occasions, including morning and evening D’ua. We are told to make Du'a when we are happy, sad, distressed, worried, or content. Even the Holy Qur'an starts from a very powerful Du'a, Surah Al-Fatihah.

Surah Al-Fatihah is a Du'a that has its own merits and rewards but also Du'a after reciting this Surah is accepted by Allah.

Conclusion

So, Allah is so merciful that He has told us how to talk to Him and how to ask from Him. He is the only one who is happy when someone asks Him. If we expect or ask help from any human, He may show us arrogance at any point but Allah is the only one who knows the condition of his people and never gets angry with those who seek help from Him.

As a Muslim, this is a great blessing and weapon we have got from Almighty Allah, so use it every day to remain in the protection of Allah.
